Van Dyke I Houses Opens ‘Sapphire’s Corner’ Play Space

One year after breaking ground, the Van Dyke I Houses community celebrated the opening of a new playground and recreation area on October 3.

Community members, led by Resident Association President Lisa Kenner, and local youth were joined by representatives from NYCHA and the offices of State Senator Roxanne Persaud and Assemblywoman Latrice Walker for a ribbon-cutting to dedicate the communal space as “Sapphire’s Corner.” Resident leaders say it will bring inner peace and hope for children and families across the Brooklyn development that is home to nearly 3,300 residents.

Surrounded by an exercise track, the playground includes colorful play structures, a spray shower, and safety surfacing.

Community members in attendance expressed appreciation for the new play space, and it was an especially exciting day for Van Dyke’s youngest residents. The play area is surrounded by an exercise track and features colorful play structures and a flower-shaped spray shower, along with safety surfacing. The exercise track, which was designed with input from residents, encourages neighbors to come outdoors for walks, running, or open-ended play.

The Sapphire’s Corner playground is part of a group of grounds improvement projects planned throughout the Van Dyke Houses campus, including renovations to two seating areas as well as a separate picnic area.
